Porsche Say "Yes" to Electric Powered 911
We have already seen that Porsche has dropped diesel
engines in the Cayenne and the word is that hybrid engines are
around the corner.
Now the word is that Porsche would be happy to put an electric
engine in the 911.
Michael Macht, newly appointed President and
chief executive at Porsche has recently been quoted saying that
Porsche would be more than happy to use electric engines in any of
their models. Macht spoke about the challenges the Porsche
technicians face with replicating the performance heritage, he was
honest in stating that they are behind in the race compared to
other manufacturers. Given the level of technology with battery
cells and electric cars there is no sense in rushing to produce
anything yet, as the range battery cells provide is no where near
enough to urge people to buy an electric Porsche.

Tesla have already shown the world that high
performance sports cars can be produced on electric power, but
sadly the disadvantages of charging the car and the poor range will
always push buyers to traditional forms of power. Porsche tuning
specialist RUF recently previewed an electric power Porsche at the
Frankfurt car show, the “Greenster” as it has been named was a
converted 911 Targa featuring a 362bhp (270Kw) electric motor with
950Nm of torque at the rear, where the flat-six petrol engine would
normally sit. The tuning company was considering running a limited
run in 2010, so we will keep our eyes open for that. Many industry
experts speculate that these cars will be a collector’s piece and
be doomed to sit in garages and museums.
The motor industry in general is focusing on
the race for the next renewable fuel source, it good to see Porsche
identifying that they need to be in the race.
